Finding a recycle solution for bed mattresses
“We have been able to recycle 77% of the mattress components from this initial trial, showing that a significant portion of a mattress does not need to end up in landfill.”
All Heart NZ client, Andoo, engaged our ReThink service to help work on a solution for the recycling of mattresses. Andoo have a comprehensive plan of activity around sustainability initiatives which, in Australia, includes mattress recycling through the Soft Landings Product Stewardship scheme.
New Zealand does not currently have a Product Stewardship scheme for mattresses and around 300,000 mattresses per year end up in landfill. Here they can cause issues as they can clog machinery, are difficult to compact, and they create large soft spaces that can turn into sinkholes after filling.
Initial investigations conducted by All Heart showed that most of the components of a mattress can be recycled in NZ. We agreed with Andoo to run an initial trial to dismantle the mattresses that had been collected by their NZ Distribution Centre.
These mattresses were delivered to the All Heart NZ hub in Manukau early December and were dismantled by a team of our staff, after training and instruction.
We have been able to recycle 77% of the mattress components from this initial trial, showing that a significant portion of a mattress does not need to end up in landfill.
We will continue to dismantle and recycle mattresses and plan to grow our capacity to provide this service. Companies, such as Andoo, who are committed to taking responsibility for their impact on the environment and reducing waste to landfill, are key to the success of this service.
The All Heart NZ ReThink service provides corporates with leadership and support to integrate sustainable solutions into their organisation.
